PLEASE MAKE THE RHINO HEAD TUTORIAL THAT SHIPS WITH MAX BEFORE STARTING!! That is the tutorial about making a head of a rhinoceros (under F1), and not the tutorial about a head in Rhino3D! :)

Then you can proceed with this tutorial :)

First take the blueprints, crop them in Photoshop and place them on planes (for a tutorial see: here)

Now start drawing splines along the edges of the car in the front view (or side, just the view where you see the side of the car). I assume you know how to draw splines and how use the sub-object qua vertices (bezier, bezier corner, smooth and corner). If not then look in the Help file that ships with Max. Make sure that you always form triangles or preferably squares, never make a 'face' with five vertices, because it will not work then (the surface modifier that is).

Next is placing all the vertices of your spline at the right place in the last and third dimension. Do that by using the top view: align all the vertices at the right spot. From here on it is pretty straight forward: do this for all the different parts (front / rear bumper, roof, hood etc.) Make use of the great tool called snap (see Help file for more info). When you did that, add a surface modifier to your spline(s) and you have a perfect mesh, try to play around with the segments number and see what happens. An extra meshsmooth always helps too for a final touch.

The rest of the images is the progress of the scene I used (my favorite car: The Lancia Delta Integrale Evoluzione).

If you're into FreeHand, you can do all your splines (well... most at least!) in that and then export the different elements as .ai files... import to Max and whahey!!! 8)

The FreeHand projections are also useful for creating accurate textures/bumpmaps/specular maps, if you export them as .psd's to PhotoShop

hi. i have been trying to complete this tutorial for a while now and am fairly confident i have completed the first part of it. I am however confused with what you mean by aligning all the vertices at the right spot whilst in top view??? if you are able to send me a print screen or something of what it looks like in the viewport or any tips it would be much appreciated.

het heeft me 4 uur gekost om alle splines een beetje op de goede hoogte te krijgen.. maar ik krijg ze niet aan elkaar.. (niet magnetisch ofzo?) en krijg er ook geen skin overheen.

I can't believe the garbage people write to you, most of them have no idea about modeling and they couldn't even bother to open up the help section and have a read.

Where is the spline button are you for real.

Great tutorials! There are so many tutes on the net which are just do A, then B, then C. Rather than: you want to do A, so your options are B and C because D. So well done!!

One last thing that would be great to add is creasing in spline modeling. Your EP/MS tutes are great and I've started modeling a car with splines but I can't think of any _easy_ way of adding creases. I notice your final render above has these creases but the wires don't show it.

If you ever get a chance, this would round off your tute set perfectly. Thanks and keep up the great work!!

Hi I've been looking at this example for weeks and I want it to ask you something. You need 3 or 4 vertices on faces but can this faces be any size as long it makes a face with the surface modifier.
